Driving Question: How can we use our knowledge of Mayan history, and analysis of social and environmental issues,  to REIMAGINE the traditional land of the Maya as a FUTURISTIC environment, through the planning of a sustainable transportation and environmental plan?

Introduction: The world is rife with social, economic and environmental issues. You belong to a generation that will face unparalleled world crises, caused by overpopulation, lack of resources, climate change, air and water pollution, deforestation, human conflicts, etc. Most adults have ideas on how to combat these issues, but it is YOU who will truly hold the power to bring about positive change.

What if the Riviera Maya became an independent and sovereign republic in the future? You’ll be working in a team of four to reimagine the Riviera Maya as a futuristic, metropolitan land with Mayan and colonial roots. How will The Gulf of Mexico, The Caribbean Sea, underground rivers, cenotes, coral reefs and mangroves play into future water issues? What would Chichen Itza, Tulum, Valladolid, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel and Isla Mujeres look like as futuristic cities? How will wildlife be protected? What if Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba and Ek Balam were never abandoned?

Your team will study the pre-Columbian history of the Americas, including a deep-dive into Mayan Civilization. This will include an introduction to the field of archaeology. You will also learn about social and environmental issue facing Mayan people today. Your team will funnel your knowledge, skills and creativity into four products as we progress through Project MAYA.
